International Sign Interpreting is a specialised form of sign language interpretation

International Sign Interpreting is a specialised form of sign language interpretation that is used to facilitate communication between people who use different sign languages. International Sign Interpreters have a special skill set and profile, and the World Federation of the Deaf and the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters have established the International Sign Interpreter Accreditation as a joint initiative to meet the increasing demand of International Sign. The pathway to becoming a fully-fledged interpreter in international sign is not easy. One of the conditions is that a sign language interpreter is fluent in one or more national sign Languages.

Community and INSTITUTION TRAINING

Training Of Deaf Community Members And Other Institutions On The Correct Use Of Sasl Interpreters

SASLINC sees this area of training as a priority. Often untrained SASL interpreters violate the rights of members of the Deaf community. This situation prevails because of a lack of knowledge/information in the Deaf community about eg:

  • The role of the SASL interpreter
  • Responsibilities of the SASL interpreter
  • Code of Ethics for SASL interpreter
  • Rights of the Deaf client
  • Rights of the SASL interpreter
